Moxibustion for Turning Breech Baby
A breech position, where the baby is positioned feet or bottom first in the uterus, occurs in approximately 3% to 4% of full-term pregnancies. One traditional Chinese medicine technique that has been used to encourage the baby to turn to a head-down position is moxibustion.
What is Moxibustion?
Moxibustion (or moxa) involves burning the herb mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) near specific acupuncture points to stimulate and warm the area. For breech presentations, the focus is on the acupuncture point BL-67 (Zhiyin), located at the outer corner of the pinky toe. The heat generated by moxibustion is believed to stimulate prostaglandin receptors, leading to mild uterine contractions that can encourage the baby to move into a head-down position.
Efficacy and Timing
Research suggests that moxibustion, when performed between 33 to 35 weeks of gestation, may reduce the likelihood of the baby remaining in a breech position at birth. However, it's important to note that while moxibustion can increase the chances of turning the baby, it does not guarantee success, and its effectiveness may vary.
Safety Considerations
Moxibustion is generally considered safe when performed correctly. Potential side effects are minimal but can include increased fetal movements, uterine contractions, nausea, headaches, and minor burns if the moxa stick is held too close to the skin. Therefore, it's crucial to receive proper instruction and, if possible, perform the technique under the guidance of a trained professional.
Recommended At-Home Protocol
Preparation: Before beginning moxibustion, perform 10 to 20 cat-cow exercises to open the hips and pelvis, creating more space for the baby to turn.
Moxibustion Application: With the assistance of a partner or caregiver, apply moxibustion to the UB67 point on each pinky toe for about 10 minutes per side. Use the "sparrow-pecking" technique to avoid overheating the area. It's often easier to light the moxa stick with a candle and extinguish it in a fire-safe container for reuse.
Rest: After the session, lie on your side to provide the baby with optimal space to move.
Consistency: Repeat this routine nightly for up to one week. Schedule a follow-up appointment with your prenatal care provider to monitor the baby's position.
Incorporating regular acupuncture sessions during this period may enhance the effectiveness of moxibustion. Please contact me if you would like to schedule an appointment or free consultation.
Please note: Always consult with your healthcare provider before beginning any new treatment during pregnancy to ensure it's appropriate for your individual circumstances.
